The William Oliver
Though many new buildings copy the distinctive flair of Art Deco styling, Atlanta’s William Oliver Condominiums offers the real thing. Located at Peachtree & Marietta Streets, The William Oliver was designed in 1930 as an office building for the city’s Fairlie-Poplar financial district. Even then, the building was winning design awards, and is currently is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the largest example of Art Deco architecture in the American South. In the 21st century, the 17-story, red granite and limestone high-rise was redeveloped and upgraded for residential condos by Skelton Development Co., and its genuine Art Deco ornamentation has been lovingly preserved.
Even at street-level The William Oliver is impressive, with a bronze canopy framing its grand entrance. The lobby has been restored rather than redeveloped and features the original terrazzo marble flooring, authentic murals, and elaborately-styled brass elevators. Its exterior stone facade shows the hand-carved waves, rosettes and chevrons typical of Art Deco, though now the building also is graced with carefully landscaped rooftop gardens and swimming pool for residents.
The William Oliver’s 115 new residential units are designed in eight floor plans, ranging from 465-square-foot studios to 1,310-square-foot two-bedroom homes. Each space incorporates the high ceilings and oversized windows of the original design, along with high-tech wiring for today’s electronics and telecommunications. Residents can select stainless steel kitchen appliances, granite or Corian counter tops, furniture-quality cabinetry, designer fixtures in both kitchens and baths, and exotic floorings like bamboo or Portuguese cork. Round-the-clock concierge services, storage areas, secure covered parking, business and fitness centers are provided. In addition, the ground floor offers the convenience of a grocery, New York-style deli, and other retails shops.
Though once Atlanta’s financial district, Fairlie-Poplar now is largely residential, though it remains only walking distance from Downtown businesses, shopping, restaurants, sports and entertainment facilities. The William Oliver borders on Woodruff Park and is surrounded by the Georgia State University campus, adding greenery and open space to its urban environment.
