The Columbian
Chicago’s new Columbian high-rise residential condo, currently under construction at 1160 South Michigan Avenue in the South Loop area, boasts forever-unobstructed views of the lakefront. The 46-story tower borders the city’s Grant Park, with a mandate that disallows future construction and preserves magnificent views for the Columbian’s residents. Though a towering structure with strong vertical lines, the Columbian offers a brick-clad external surface that is more vintage than contemporary. The impressive ground-floor entrance is surrounded by a high archway that resonates with surrounding buildings in the formerly industrial area, now being redeveloped as an upscale residential urban neighborhood.
The Columbian’s 220 residences are defined by their elevation. Retail businesses will occupy the lower floors, along with garage parking. The Boulevard Level, floors nine through 32, offer seven units per floor; the Tower Level, floors 33-39, are designed with five homes per floor; and the Penthouse Level, floors 40-44, have only three units per floor. The top floors, 45 and 46, are shared by only two residences per floor, and provide 24-foot terraces. The design allows for a wide range of floor plans to accommodate young professionals as well as established families. Units range from one bedroom/one bath to three bedrooms/3.5 baths. Buyers also can select a residence that incorporates a separate den, dining room, family or great room. Room size in all units is especially generous and includes private balconies to take advantage of those fabulous views. All residences feature hardwood flooring with Berber carpeting in bedrooms. Kitchens have furniture-quality cabinetry with granite counter tops and best-quality appliances. Many master bedroom suites have his-and-her closets with organizers, marble-tiled bathrooms, and separate soaking tubs and showers.
Building amenities include a rooftop garden and sun deck, fitness center with a sauna and cardio and strength-training equipment, entertainment suite, business center, and 24-hour doorman.
